Group of people must be socially marginal (occupying a marginal role in society) or poorly integrated in society. Contagion: process by which extreme passions supposedly spread rapidly through a crowd like a contagious disease. Strain: breakdown of tradiional norms that supposedly precedes collecive acion. It is not absolute deprivaion that generated riots and other forms of collecive acion so much as relaive deprivaion. Relaive deprivaion: intolerable hap between the social rewards people feel they deserve and the social rewards they expect to receive. Collecive acion is a long-term atempt to correct perceived injusice that requires a sound social-organizaional basis. Emerge from collecive acion only when those who are discontent succeed in building up a more or less stable membership and organizaional base.
