SOCB26H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Cold War, Meritocracy, These Kids
Document Summary
Schools face org difficulties in carrying out their tasks of dispersing knowledge & values. Why: like other work orgs, schools expect students to show up for work. Remind students that grades have consequences for future jobs. Remind them that good grades will make parents happy. The rewards of education come in the future. Teachers are forced to motivate students today, with rewards that may not come soon. Schools may require students to do things that they might not choose to do and so they have limited ways to motivate them. As a result, these organizations are prone to conflict. Disruptive students make it hard for teachers to teach & students to learn. It only takes a few students to disrupt the entire classroom: a degree of conflict exists in the classroom, teachers have to learn how to deal with it pretty quickly. 50% of their time is taken up maintaining order. Rules & regs may stiflesstudent enthusiasm for learning.
