Structural Functionalism Two Big Ideas 1 Schooling is the most efficient means by which the most talented individuals assume the most important positions in society y They would seek schooling as the rational where talented individuals in society would assume important positions in society regardless of what their social background isy The is both a amoral and rational argument y The school system is a meritocracy it facilitates equality of opportunity status bases on achievement rather than ascription y Wealthyand powerful parents assume they would be able to pass on their wealth to their kids y Society as a whole benefits if we have a system of the most talented and hardworking if these people get important positions y Success based on success instead of wealth y Quality of opportunities bases on social achievements y Structural functionalist would assume or argue that we would see an open society which talented children of average status have a good job and less talented
