Document Summary

Reason for skepticism: small shift in numbers can lead to significant percentage increases. 1986-1990 crime rates: female crime went from 18,336 to 23,610 (29% increase) These figures would not support a notion that there was a growing similarity between males and females and the violent crime rates. Vast majority of the increase in female youth crime was from minor assault: effects of zero tolerance policies. Particularly in schools, but not exclusive to schools. Young males and females were being treated equally by police officers and school authorities, where in the past, females were treated easier by these authority figures. There was an increase of proportions of girls being charged for different offences: self-report studies do not show significant increases in female violence and aggression. At the time there were the media reports of girls becoming nastier and involved in gangs, the differences/increases between male and female crime rates weren"t being picked up in the self-report studies.
