For mar(cid:454), the (cid:271)ase is the mode of production. The superstructure is a morphous world of culture and ideas. Capitalist ideas of the time: hard work is the way to get ahead. No matter what the mode of production in society is, the superstructure will always reflect the base. The problem is that it keeps on legitimizi(cid:374)g the s(cid:455)ste(cid:373) (cid:449)e"re using. Base is the economy and superstructure is culture. For marx, culture is nothing but the economy. Calvinists believe that people are predeter(cid:373)i(cid:374)ed o(cid:374) (cid:449)hether the(cid:455)"re goi(cid:374)g to hea(cid:448)e(cid:374) or hell (cid:271)ut god lea(cid:448)es (cid:272)lues.
