It depicts virtuous behavior, which is different from rococo. This painting was exhibited during the enlightenment (during which philosophers questions the validity of religious institutions), 4 years before the french revolution. Women in this painting: curvilinear, passive; according to the story, they are victims of this circumstance. Men in this painting: tall, strong, angular; working together, showing brotherhood. Neoclassicism: looking back to ancient greek and roman culture. The way david depict muscles and light is similar to the techniques used in ancient rome and greek.
