VPMA93H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Concerto Grosso, Ostinato, Strophic Form
Document Summary
Form the constructive or organizing element in music. How music is organized and how we perceive that. We recognize a piece by relating them to other pieces. Form of music has a lot to do with time. A piece of music is a span of time during which you"re listening to sonic events: the way we perceive form in music is by recognizing where those events occur and the relationship between them. Elements that help us recognize form: repetition: gives the music a particular shape. Melodies: long sequence of notes, sounds like it has a beginning, middle, and end, ex: happy birthday. Motives: different from melody because a motive has shorter sequences that form to make melodies, ex: beethoven"s 5th symphony. Harmonic structures: in a long piece you may hear a specific harmony in one place as you will in another, closure.
