VPMA93H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: John Blacking, Art Music, Middle Ear
Document Summary
In 26th century a trend was to look at music through the world and societies. John blacking- how musical is man? ( he wrote this book) Looked at music making on a global scale and how we look at musicians in our societies. The importance of creative listening is too often ignored in discussion of musical ability, and yet it is a fundamental to music as it is to language . If someone hasn"t heard a certain type of music they would think all music sounds the same, music is a learned language from society and the way we grew up. Even if a person describes musical experiences in the technical language of music, he is in- fact describing emotional experiences which he has learned to associate with particular musical sounds . What it is in the music that makes it that way. Currently recognized divisions between art music and folk music are inadequate and misleading as conceptual tools.
