Document Summary

Once again we are dealing with a very vast, diverse, and complex area. We can only begin to scratch the surface of the music cultures found in africa, where sometimes people from one village will not recognize the music of the next village as comprehensible or meaningful. We will be exploring a variety of musical genres and instruments, demonstrating how they are integral to social, cultural and ceremonial life. Selected examples range from west african drumming at a royal ceremony honouring the chief, to communal music-making among the hunter-gatherer forest peoples (also known as pygmies) who live in central africa. I have given you a few small articles to read, plus web links to follow up if you have time and/or interest. Remember that you will be required to read the articles i provide, since information they contain may appear on the final exam.
