The Thoracic Cage
STERNUM
- Aka the breast bone. It is a flat bone made up of three fused bones:
1) Manubrium
2) Body
3) Xiphoid process
RIB CAGE
A) True Ribs - the first 7 pairs of ribs (numbered superior to inferior) they attach
directly to the sternum by COSTAL CARTILAGE
B) False Ribs - the next 3 pairs, attach indirectly to the sternum (via the true ribs
costal cartilage)
C) Floating Ribs - the last 2 pairs of ribs lack the sternum attachment
CLAVICLE
- Attaches to the sternum (manubrium) and the scapula (acromion process)
- It is the only bone used to attach the shoulder girdle to the body
ACROMION PROCESS
- Most superior aspect of the scapula. It joins with the clavicle
CORACOID PROCESS
- Inferior to the acromion. Point of muscle attachment
GLENOID CAVITY
- A very shallow cavity located on the lateral side of the scapula. It is the point of
attachment for the humerus
SCAPULAR SPINE
- Located on the posterior aspect of the scapula. Separates superior and inferior
scapular fossa
SUPRASPINOUS FOSSA
- Depression above scapular spine
