The form of signs: signifier and signified. Three kinds of signs: icon, symbol, index. Wrongs caused by social construction may entail historical rights. Semiotic: the study of language and other signs. How signifying (through language and other signs) is part of life in human society. Signifier : form of the sign, word, sign and signified : what the sign refers to. Have arbitrary (not justified) relation to signified referent . Signifier does not appoint to the signified. Something that resembles in its form what it represents. Share their physical form (shape, sound, etc) with the referent. Do not share any of their form with the referent. They don"t sound/look the same as the referent. Icons: of the sound oink oink means the sound made by a pig. And also indexes : of the animal that makes the sound (the pig itself) Yet from another point of view onomatopoeia are symbols. Icon, index, and symbols are qualities of signs.
