Images, written words, smell, sound (like a dog barking, or the word "dog" spoken), written word + object it"s on (like an ad, or a warning sign). Signification: making sense, making signs; making sense through signs (either linguistic or non-linguistic) 3 kinds of signs: symbol, index, and icon. Semiotics is the study of language (linguistics) and other signs (semiotics proper) "signifier" and "signified" are his terms; they are the foundation of how he saw communication through signs. Signifier is the black object; the image on the sign. Signified is what the black object stands for. There are 3 kinds of signs in semiotics. Symbol i. e. : like a flag or a barber pole. No particular reason why that sign should stand for what it does. Symbols have an arbitrary relation to the signified. Connected only via the system of signification (i. e. : language)
