Creates shared symbolism among disparate groups- integrative function. 1st excavated by james ford and haag- 1960s. Standard unit of measurement- some way of measuring. At least 1200 years where no one appears to be building mounds in that area. Must be dealing with a chiefdom- but no evidence of social inequality. Town- kind of looks like they have domestic refuse. Mound b first construction- looks like it was just built, no activity occurring here (hints of monumental?) Clayborne soapstone (directly from georgia and alabama) cache. Crescent shaped ridges or round truncated cones. Mound cores (original occupations) distinguished from upper deposits. Water to shell mounds contemporaneous to burials. Graves men, women and children- some buried with items- not much. Not all buried here were local virginia, coast. People living and watching ritual on top of mound.
