He believes empty" signaled the people that there was nothing in it. This is what gave him his idea of language perspectives. Whorf was fascinated that some cultures have words that others don"t. Gives them an inside look that other cultures cannot have. The weak hypothesis : language influence thought but you can get over the limitations. Hopi people: when they talk about time, they do not talk about past present or future. If you have cyclical time rather than linear, it is due to the barriers in your language not having words for past present and future. Because it does not have tense morphemes (past, future) Don"t exaggerate the influence of language on thought. No violence to maintain social order is not always necessary.
