Canadian researchers gave homeliness people with mental illnesses a home and support as a radical experiment to eradicate homelessness (2009-2013). 2235 homeless people were involved in the project. Not all received a home and support, however, as some (50%) were members of the control group. In 2007, the un declared homeless a crisis in canada. The hope was to get them houses and then improve their situation, thereafter: some of them got evicted. The result was that for every spent, were saved: the number of nights spent in hospitals and prisons dropped, as well as the number of nights spent in shelters. The satisfaction with one"s quality of life also increased dramatically. The use of food banks also dropped. The connection to family and friends also increased. There was lots of abuse from one"s childhood and trauma from residential schools and colonialism, particularly in winnipeg where the vast majority of homeless people are aboriginal.
