ANT253H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Sociolect, Cool Jazz, Colloquialism
Document Summary
Sociolect: the way you speak to society = evaluated: dialect according to social, not geographical area. Thoughts need to be packaged in words and structure. Marshall mcluhan: develop through culture and technology. Out of jazz culture: hot and cool jazz. Cool: slower, more intellectual (more attractive) - rise of youth culture and beat writers. Colloquialism: started from slang -> developed/used in ordinary conversation - spread through society. I. e. drunk - used in shakespeare -> colloquialism. Slang = powerful form of language (i. e. trump uses nothing but slang) - deviates from norm. General: we all know it, tend to avoid it (i. e. wouldn"t use cool in essay) Group-based: usually with young people -> words of code amongst certain people (restricted group) Words out of slang - can trace origins: jock (macho man), cool, loony, chick, dude (1800s. America - yankees dressed up like dudes vs. cowboys), sloshed, chill out, 24/7 (all out of youth culture)
