Document Summary

Lecture 9: failure of the state: letting die. Free trade and deindustrialization: free trade policies don"t restrict imports and exports trading of goods transnationally = tax-free. Can lead to industrialization -> can lead to areas with lower production costs, lower wages, etc. ) i. e. government subsidizing whirlpool; outsourcing; manufacturing overseas (don"t pay corporate taxes) Negative impacts of market-driven economy; supply and demand. Prices of goods/services are set by supply and demand. Entails support for highly competitiveness and promotes individualism. Those who can be productive = small subset of the population. Resource towns: being dependent on a single resource/industry. When that resource is no longer needed/available -> town becomes a ghost-town because people leave to find work elsewhere. Made for young workers and their families -> lack of infrastructure and specialization for the elderly and those with chronic illnesses etc. People have begun moving into these ghost resource towns (moving in because it"s cheap to live there)
