ANT358H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Widow Inheritance, Combination Drug, Ethnography
Document Summary
Family = network rather than groups or homogenous units. Transnational kinship networks to manage illness; how they are important in the management of illness. Transnational therapy management -> social/biological healing and social belonging. Collaborative projects extended case studies; interesting type of ethnography. Mamagirl and mamaboy lived with mother-in-law; collaborative household efforts. Art + arv = same thing 3 drugs per day or twice a day (combination drug that keeps the immune system running) Mamaboy = only let back into the family after the death of her husband. Reconfigured relations both within and between households. Sociality of treatment: importance of everyday social relationships towards maintaining persistent treatment. Treatment = dependent and affects/determines family relationships. Families = changing networks not just fixed units of undifferentiated solidarity. Households = internally differentiated with competing interests, rights, resources, obligations; bargain and negotiations -> conflict with one another.
