ANT347Y Lecture 1 Metropolis = greek “metra” mean mother; “polis” mean city, polity and police - When think of a Metropolis we think of: - Social center - Meeting place; intellectuals, researchers (notion that Metropolis is an arena where thought comes together such as in an institution) - City center - Economic center Field is focus on the city in relation to different scales (transnational and global scale) Media has a strong influence on what social life is like in the cities / Metropolis Cultural references are seen in the media Film – “Metropolis” by Fritz Lang (?) - Tells a story of an industrial city - Rich on top and poor underground - 2 themes: 1) divided city (rich / poor) and 2) contested city - These 2 themes are also central to this course Global city Walter Benjamin - Believe
