ANT208H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Menarche, Thrifty Phenotype, Asthma
Document Summary
It is the branch of evolutionary theory that attempts to account for the ways in which the stages of the life cycle and the behaviours associated with those stages are organized (117). Balance of time and energy constraints: there is a nite amount of energy and we are constantly balancing how much of it is used in one place. The two areas we balance are between growth and maturation (necessary precursor to reproduction). Overarching the whole element is the maintenance of life. This leads to a series of predictions: if you have a community of high adult mortality, the life history would be based on growing fast and reproducing early. If you have a low adult mortality, you can spend more time growing and aging well. Once you have low juvenile mortality you can focus more on having less kids and focusing more on making sure they survive.
