Document Summary

Lecture 10: stress, social inequality, race and ethnicity (health. Increased heart rate, sweaty palms, shortness of breath, eat more/less, sleep disturbances. Could be a short lived response but happens frequently. Term derives from physics: mechanical response (exert force on something) Complex network of nerve signalling and hormonal messaging -> activates/suppresses physiological processes. Regulate physiology in response to daily activities and environmental conditions. Evolutionary perspective: adaptive response that enables us to respond to environment that will allow us to survive. Stressor: anything that activates stress response (typically threat to survival/reproduction) Hans selye: general adaptation syndrome: same response regardless of what the stressor is; set of physiological processes for all responses (non-specific) Allostasis: normal range for physiological system (variable by circumstances; adaptive) - more flexibility than homeostasis i. e. temperature (warmer with infection), blood pressure. Allostatic load: costs of negative health outcomes of prolonged stress response. Eventually you might not return down to normal levels.
