Engineering design process: problem space, design brief, define the problem, solution space, generate alternative concepts, evaluate alternatives, detailed design. Design space: clients give messy problems, we need to separate it into the requirements. Widen the design space: decision making. David m. kelley is a good example. Brainstorming: free brain storming, structured brain storming. Everyone stands up and says ideas as they occur. Problem = first few ideas that come out. If there is a dominant person, it may be devastating to idea generation. Each person writes down ideas on their own. Share with group post own idea generation. Prevents social loafing (a member is not contributive) Some other methods for idea generation: functional decomposition, scamper, design by analogy. Be sure to be familiar with all of the creativity methods discussed in the textbook. Function decomposition for idea generation: decompose problem , brainstorm each piece, morphological chart to re-compose ideas. Separate into containing meals, keeping meals hot, etc.
