Abstract expressionist paintings were not references to anything else (the way a landscape is a reference to a real landscape, a portrait a reference to a person) Importance of the surface; reasserting value of painting in age of photography. Liberated him from formal anxieties; eliminated composition, relationships, light, etc. Woman is not discreet or set apart from the background.
