Architecture of the modern movement is architecture of transparency and legibility (what you see is what you get) Example: pilasters are not actually columns and i-beams, like pilasters, have no function to them and are plastered on the facades but don"t serve a purpose. The text ornament and crime says ornament is no longer a natural element of our culture. Ornament is no longer organically linked to modern architecture and culture. Emergence of industrial capitalism changed everything (labour of artisans was being devalued) Despite this statement that ornament was crime, ornament did not disappear from the modern movement, but rather it came back in different forms. Ornament had transformed into something else (ornament through the attribute of materials) Example: adolf loos" mueller house"s richly marbled interiors. Example: le corbusier"s villa saboye"s white walls. There has been a moralizing attitude in modern architecture. Moralizing attitude has been predicated on a careful distinction between what is necessary and what is unnecessary.
