Silk route was very important but after 1400 it started to move to sea transport. During the ming dynasty but not part of it. Keeping out the people from the north was the main purpose of the wall. Most of the buildings were made out of wood - Belief that wood was a material of above ground, so for the living people. Stone was from the ground was for the dead. The largest stone object is the wall however. The involvement of architects is unclear - there was no imperial planning office. Empire built by yongle emperor who was calling the shots . Approximate population of 700,000 - 10x the size of population than florence. Density would be 20,000 people per square km in a low rise city. Forbidden city is the core which is a palace. Around it is the city serving the palace.
