Document Summary
Waxing moon is getting bigger, waning moon is getting smaller. The moon orbits around the earth, but does not itself rotate; thus why we always see the same side. Some phases we can"t see at certain times because we are facing away from the moon. We will never see the moon next to the sun in our sky because the side we are seeing would not be illuminated in that case. The phases of the earth would be opposite from the phases of the moon.
