Large enough so the strength of gravity is stronger than strength of the rock/ice it is made of. Orbits the main asteroid belt between mars and jupiter. Still active after a meteor strike 34 million years ago. Much wider across the equator than it is tall. In part because a huge impact gouged out a crater (half the size of vesta) near its south pole. Over 1 million asteroids larger than 1 km diameter. Orbit the sun in same direction as the planets. Gaps in the orbits where jupiter has cleared out everything. Not large enough to be roughly spherical. Vesta, ida (has its own moon: dactyl), mathilda, lutetia. Sometimes asteroids hit the earth turn to meteorite. Meteorites are part of other bodies that were thrown off in collisions. Metal-rich processed meteorite: made of iron and other metals from a shattered asteroid"s core. Rocky-processed meteorite: resembles volcanic rocks found on earth; from mantle of collision on vesta"s south pole.
