Document Summary

Population: collection of individuals of the same species. Spatially limited; ie. a cluster of spruce trees in a certain area. Focuses on factors in the environment determine the size of populations. Calculus lets us look at smooth changes where the population size is a continuous function (may be curved but continuous at all times) Humans reproduce all throughout the year, as opposed to animals that mate seasonally, for example birds. So humans would be better represented in a continuous function than would birds. Geometric growth model (equation at point 3) If la(cid:373)da is e(cid:454)a(cid:272)tl(cid:455) (cid:1005), the populatio(cid:374) does(cid:374)"t (cid:272)ha(cid:374)ge. If lamda is less than 1, the population dwindles, as deaths exceed births. If r is 0 in this equation then it grows steadily. If r is greater than 0, growth is exponential. If r is less than 0, the growth goes to extinction.
