Document Summary

Bio120h1 f - lecture 7 - geographic speciation. This isn"t really population-level polymorphism (color of different morphs), since there are distinct boundaries between populations; can say that species is polymorphic. Wright believed that stochastic factors could play role in evolution. Now, we know that fisher is right, though in some circumstances, stochastic factors can be important in evolution. Even in the same geographic location, there can be differences between two areas in it, very close to each other. With steep boundaries that have very different selection pressures. For example, on a slope facing north on one face and south on another face, one can be much warmer than the other due to being shielded from cold winds. Thus animals and plants living on warmer side may have different pollinating / flowering / mating seasons with those on the colder side, leading to reproductive barriers in two populations of a species living on the two faces.
