Document Summary

Bio120: sex, reproductive systems, and evolution (lecture 6) Hermaphrodites: no mammals, but invertebrates, slugs, protozoa, plants. Recognized that the basal form of reproduction on earth is asexual reproduction. Many organisms do both sexual and asexual reproduction. Water fleas (daphnia): different reproductive systems occur in different environments. Water full of nutrients, sex is not good because seeds will be lost. Roots touch bottom, cue for clones to start flowering. When water level rises again, they germinate and float with water. Deep water favours clonal propagation, shallow water favours sexual reproduction. Time and energy to find and attract mates. Investment in things like gametes, behaviour to attract mate, nectar (attract pollinator) When animals are interested in sex, they may not be as aware of predators, let defences down. When you clone, all of your genes are going into offspring. Could get better or worse combinations when you mate, luck of the draw.
