Darwin grew up in a very low species diversity area. Ended up in a warm climate area; brazil; high temperatures year round. Pest and disease pressures are higher than temperate zones. Species of plants are largely separated; therefore, the species diversity is a lot greater; individuals of a single species are largely separated; are largely evergreen. In tropical forests, wind pollination is very rare and very ineffective. Plants have developed new methods of pollination; benefit off of animals. Saw lots of fossils, especially of the giant armadillo; thinks about extinction rates. Saw a lot of rough, newer landscapes (mountainous, filled with glaciers) and began to think about abiotic features. In the galapagos, he noticed that the flora and fauna arrived by long distance dispersal from south-american mainland. A lot of variation within a single species; intra specific variation; so different that they cannot even mate with each other. Thought about the origin of species and how they diverged.
