Document Summary
Bio120 lecture 10: phylogenetics and macroevolution: how to best classify life- systematics, taxonomy, and cladistics, phylogenetic trees and the reconstruction of evolutionary history using molecular data, character evolution, the origin of adaptations and key innovations. Speciation via reproductive isolation allows organisms to diverge and diversify. Initially some southern african ancestor: overtime we get change in lineage, adaptations to its own environment. Lineages keep branching off into different directions, until eventually we end up with the relationships between modern day species: nodes represent speciation events, new phenotypes evolving at branches to give modern day species. Carolus linneaus (1707-1778: father of taxonomy, binomial nomenclature, hierarchical system of classification (king phillip came from germany swimming, kingdoms, phyla, classes, families, genera, species, hierarchical system exists because evolution of species. What is the purpose of a biological classification: name is a key to the literature on an organism, we need to name it to study it, therefore has predictive power, enables interpretation of origins.
