Document Summary

Lecture 23 trophic relationships and plant animal interactions: species are all connected and interacting with each other. Inefficiency in conversion of energy in higher trophic levels: limit to food chain. Food chains vs food webs: food chain linear sequence of energy from sun to __etc. Complex networks of species interactions in ecological communities: more realistic and complex ; showing networks, but doesn"t include some aspects. Experiment: add/remove species from environment and see how it affects community, right side applied insecticide to remove herbicide, goldenrod beetles suppressed, left side nothing applied, higher trophic level can. Hairston, smith and slobodkin: why is there so much green tissue in world, why don"t herbivores eat all green tissue, world is green because carnivores eat herbivores which keeps green tissue abundant. Examples: caribbean, plants is eaten by herbivorous beetles, red arrow = energy, beetles eaten by spiders or by lizards, lizards eat spiders too.
