R-strategists- not fighters, rather flee-ers.
K-strategists- good competitors, but not good at moving fro one place to
another. *study list!
Mining ghost town, smiths pika research (metapopulation analysis
used) miners flooded into these areas in search for gold, failed
*short-lives phenomenon). Around this mining town are patches,
tailing piles, pikas like living in rock piles (artificially created by
miners).
Do not need to know metapopulation equations!
Exctinction can be driven by:
1.strong density-dependant factors (chaos)
2.unstable competition
3.unstable predator and prey
4.allee effects at low density
these tendencies are countered by non-equilibrial conditions, habitat
patchiness, rescue-by-migration, variation in life-history strategy
