Document Summary
Bio120 lecture 17 physiological ecology of plants: more tradeoffs. Growth & development carbon balance: gas exchange air flow over leaves, if there is no moving air, there is a buildup of waste gasses near the leaf surface. Air filled with water vapour, less co2 available. Laminar flow: happens when air flows over a smooth surface, air flow breaks down into layers. Layer closest to the smooth surface moves the slowest (friction) This slowest layer is called the boundary layer . This is bad for a plant because the boundary layer has stagnant air: turbulent flow, happens when the surface is not smooth, the bumps/ridges cause chaotic wind movement near the surface. This chaotic movement causes the air to keep flowing. Bumps cause wind turbulence: hence many leaves will have small bumps or try to avoid a completely smooth surface in order to promote gas exchange. The leaves are all genetically the same.
