Document Summary

Paley was a philosopher who supported gods creation of everything. Theory of evolution: life on earth evolved gradually beginning with one primitive species; and the mechanism for most (but not all) of evolutionary change is natural selection. Broken down into: evolution, gradualism, speciation, common ancestry, natural selection, and nonselective mechanisms of evolutionary change. Evolution; species undergo genetic change over time (changes can be caused by mutations) Gradualism; takes many generations to produce a substantial evolutionary change (e. g. birds from reptiles) When natural selection is strong evolutionary change is fast, once species well adapted to environment evolution slows. Speciation; evolution of different groups that can"t interbreed. Common ancestry; we can always look back in time, using dna sequences or fossils, and find descendants joining at their ancestors. Natural selection; good genes passed on for survival and reproduction while weak genes weeded out.
