Document Summary

Intense study of model organisms is not what we"re doing, more interested in the differences between species, and how they are involved with meeting challenges of the environment. Organisms are solutions note: must read textbook and go to lectures. Habitats & organisms are patchy at all scales. At the global scale, see reefs vs. deep ocean, brown dry areas vs. green and clouds covering those green places, temperature is pretty much a gradient from the poles moisture goes along with clouds. White snow is around green, green goes with water. Talk about changes in the 100"s of meters. See aspen trees(golden) and the alpine meadow, going higher up see the dark green coniferous forests replacing the golden aspens. During wet years, deserts can see explosions of flowering plants that come out of dormant seeds already in the soil, can see the patchiness based on color of flowers. At the smaller microhabitat, see the lichens adhering to the rock.
