Document Summary

Villi increase the surface area of the intestine: the cell has the microvilli on it (the microvilli is on the apical membrane. The cell is asymmetrical (polarized = different on different sides) The glucose is being moved from inside the lumen where it"s at low concentration to the epithelial cell (an area of high concentration inside the cell) and then to the blood stream (an area of low concentration) Inside the cytosol (in the epithelial cell) glucose is at a higher concentration. Lower concentration of glucose on the basolateral side. Asymmetric distribution: the cotransporter (which is a symporter) will move the sodium and the glucose into the lumen of the epithelial cell. The glucose is being moved from an area of low concentration to high. The facilitated diffusion of glucose: from high concentration to low. This is passive and does not require a gradient or energy.
