Document Summary

Phenotypes can exist outside the cell in which the genes exert their immediate biochemical inluence and can be produced by individuals for example things produced by individuals. Dam building gene encoding for taller dam leads to a beneit for that gene: gene increases in total populaion. It can also be things that are produced in other individuals. An animal"s behavior tends to maximize the survival of the genes for" that behavior, whether or not those genes happen to be in the body of the paricular animals performing it . There are 2 broad categories of extended phenotypes in parasites: host behavioral modiicaion, host morphological modiicaion, host molecular modiicaion products of genes and their phenotypes. These extended phenotypes work in order to facilitate the growth, reproducion or transmission of the parasite. Hypotheses for idenifying if parasites are really manipulaing hosts: adapive for the parasite. Generates a itness beneit to parasites that led to natural selecion for trait.
