Document Summary

Readings (alberts et al. , custom text) pages 65-71; 116-120. Analysis of a large set of cellular transcripts. Gene low expressed in cancer cells are highly expressed in normal cells. Can we convert the cancer cells into more healthy ceks. Hl--60: cell grown on plate that are similar to cancer cells. Treated with chemicals showing the red pattern now. Ic-50 lower concentration needed to change the cancer cell. For prokaryotes, transcription and translation occur at the same time. For eukaryotes, transcription and translation are separated. A pre-mrna is produced first, and its modified in 3 ways: Eukaryotic rna processing is tightly coupled to transcription: Addition of a modified guanine nucleotide to the 5"end of pre-mrna (3 enzymes involved) A protein bind to the 5" cap. 1) helps in rna processing and export from the nucleus. 2) important role in translation of mrnas in the cytosol. 3) protects mrna from degradation rna splicing.
