This will allow us to appreciate many roles they play in the body. Carbohydrates are known commonly as sugars and starch. The name carbohydrates can be broken down to carbon which means it contains carbon and hydrate meaning the ratio of hydrogen to oxygen in the molecule is often 2:1 as it is in water or h2o. Carbohydrates are important in many ways such as carbon from sugars can be used to make other molecules in the body. For example potatoes and pastas that are largely carbohydrates and they increase body fat. As we"ll see in metabolic lectures eating carbs can drive weight gains in other ways. Carbohydrates are very necessary part of our diets. Simple sugars are often used as fuels in the body and brain is very dependent on the simple sugar glucose for energy. If blood glucose levels are too low, you become hypoglycemic and you may lose consciousness.
