Document Summary

We"ll see how properties of phospholipids that were introduced in last lecture allows them to form bilayer and associate with proteins to form biological membranes. Recall that biological membranes are vitally important components of living cells. They separate the inside of cells from its surrounding and in eukaryotes they compartmentalize the cell into organelles or specialize functions that takes place. It is important to remember that membranes are not static structures but are dynamic. Panel a shows that phagocyte cells in green with the red plasma membrane and particle its going to eat in yellow. In panel b the cell is changing its shape to envelope the particle and in panel c the particle is fully encapsulated within the cell enclosed by a second internal membrane. In the image of the real cell on the right, the cell membrane has been labeled in red and cytoskeleton protein is labeled in green.
