Document Summary

All 20 amino acids ph, hydrophobicity, side chains. Ch 2 (q 1(abc), 2(abc), 3, 4, 19b) Lecture 2/12 - intro to proteins and protein structure. You won"t be asked to draw the structures of individual aas. Lecture notes: the amino acids and stabilization forces. Alanine: has a methyl group and is hydrophobic bc of this. Involved in proteins that are closely packed --> this and alanine form the close points. Valine: very hydrophobic because of the multiple methyls --> usually buried inside. Leucine: like valine, but has the extra carbon (more hydrophobic) Most common in soluble proteins and in membrane proteins. Isoleucine: this has a beta branch --> a branch coming off the beta-carbon. Have very different properties as a result of this branching. Found on surface of proteins --> almost same size of alanine. Phosphorylation (kinases) modify to make it more hydrophilic. Threonine: oh group is reactive --> found in enzymes.
