Sathya SivapathasundaramInquiry Paper Part 2While we live we shovel your coal cook your food and spread our legs and then when we have the gall to die you tell us our work is still not done Holman 266 The novel The thDress Lodger by Sheri Holman is an intriguing novel that takes place in 19 century Sunderland EnglandIt is a story about a fifteen year old dress lodger Gustine who works day and night in a quarantined town so her baby can survive from Ectopia Cordis The novel discusses her journey as she meets important characters along the way such as Dr Chiver who claims he can help cure her son and the Eye who she initially believes is a threat to her and her child The gap between social classes and DrChivers ruthless behavior effects people from the lower class who do not have any authority Similarly the novel Sarahs Key written by Tatiana De Rosnay is a novel that brings upon the chaotic history that had occurred in the 1940s This novel begins with two intertwining stories One story is about a Jewish girl Sarah and her family who are brutally arrested in the Velodrome dHiver roundup in Paris 1942 by the Germans The second story is told by Julia Jarmond a modern day American journalist who investigates the roundup and unravels the hidden secrets that link to her family As she continues her investigation her relationship with Bertrand begins to fall apart The racial discrimination and Bertrands selfish behaviour makes the world seems more chaotic Both The Dress Lodger and Sarahs Key have elements that highlight the chaos that exists in the world and within the characters In The Dress Lodger Gustine is an ambitious young mother that would do anything so that her baby can survive However I believe that a young mother who has an urge to do Page 1 of 7
