CSB346 Lecture 3: Galen: learned that neck injury = stopped breathing Lorry: Rabbits with no cerebellum were breathing Legallois: area close to vagus nerve generates breathing ▯ rebotC Brain stem Rostral Dorsal Caudal Ventral Adrian and Buytend: electrode to brain stem = gill movement in fish Gesell: recorded neurons in brainstem Respiratory rhythm generator: ­ Phrenic nerve: fires during inspriration; frequency increases during active ventilation ­ External intercostals: fires during inspriration; frequency increases during active ventilation ­ Internal intercostals: does NOT fire during normal breathing; frequency increases during active  ventilation Pontine Respiratory Group: forms the breathing pattern NOT THE RHYTHM DORSAL/ VENTRAL resp. group: generates the breathing rhythm VRG: has the pre­BotC (generates the breathing rhythm  ▯Can measure hypoglossal nerve (tongue) and cells in pre­BotC Ventral Respiratory Group BotC Pre­BotC Dorsal Respiratory Group Changes
