Atomic spectra: Sample is vaporized and decomposed into atoms…composition of the atoms in the
vapour are then measured by emission or absorption of characteristic’s of radiation.
In a solution…atomic spectroscopy can be used to distinguish one element from another. Analyte is
measured in ppm or ppt and sample must be diluted to be analyzed
1) Liquid sample 1 aspirated (sucked) into the flame.
2) Liquid evaporates and remaining solid is atomized
3) Hollow cathode lamp containing iron cathode…the cathode is bombarded with energetic Ne and
