Document Summary

Functional groups: group of atoms having characteristic behaviour in all molecules it is in. Group typically reacts independently of the rest of the molecule. Ex. alkanes react similarly with the same compounds regardless of alkane"s complexity. Hydrocarbon: alkene (cc double bond, alkyne (cc triple bond, arene (aromatic ring c alternating single double bonds) C-x (electronegative element: alkyl halide, alcohol, ether, phosphate. Carbonyl (co double bond: aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid, ester, thioester, amide, acid chloride. Isomers: compounds w/ the same molecular formula that differ in atom arrangement. Chain isomers: change in the carbon chain arrangement. Functional group isomers: different functional group stemming from different arrangement of same molecules. Position isomers: have same functional group connected to different atoms. Only has cc, and ch single bonds. Aliphatic hydrocarbon: a compound saturated with hydrogen (every open bond is taken up by hydrogen) Alkyl group: alkane group, that"s lost a hydrogen atom.
