• Participant observation: what is the hoped-for data?
• Language, procedure, the outline of social relations
• Signs for the existence of a larger system that affects daily life
• Clockers and The Wire: multiple sites (precincts, homes, schools)
• But race is not reduced to the problem of racism – it is linked to class, work (and its
decline)
• It’s connected to the failure of government, education, media
• These are interconnected social strata!
