Simple plots, high action formula for success: eventually theatres were redesigned to accommodate the spectacle of action cinema. Action cinema is not a genre in itself: it channels through other genres. Ex: fast and furious, james bond, lord of the rings, titanic: absorbs existing genres into its orbit. First film was mainly science fiction, but the next films were mainly action: couples and copulates with existing genres, no pure action film. Action, adventure, spectacle are often used interchangeably: adventure. Technical display that offers specific pleasures that differ from narrative enjoyment.
