Document Summary

Themes shown in works and day religious immorality/injustice. Pretty hard work for a pretty meager existence. Split into little states *communities* major ones: sparta & athens: people identified with these communities but. , worshipped same gods, spoke same language. Palace at knossos - nice walls, beautiful art, suggests a wealthy culture. Not one big palace, but a bunch of palaces built around a center court. Even the houses outside the palace are pretty fancy - by ancient standards. Minoan art - images of daily life, nature scenes instead of glorifying the king. Seemed to really appreciate or even worship nature. Matriarchal society - at least respected women and gave them a position of honor. Derived from the depiction of a bare chested woman wearing a ruffled skirt and holding snakes. Conclusion might be incorrect - the greeks didn"t respect women but worshipped their female gods - could be the same for the minoans despite their reverence for the snake-goddess.
